Located in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyards area is an english bastide (walled town) founded in 1281 by Edouard the 1st.
The city had 10 different Lords and was successively French, English and French once and for all in 1451.
The city has preserved its stronghold architecture, numerous arched cellars and its Gothic church.
Other sites of interest : Romanic churches of Saint Leger de Vignague, Saint Romain de Vignague and Templar church of Puch – the ancient wash-house at Saint Romain.
Many foot-paths around the walled city. Starting point of the Voie Verte (green lane), the cycling track connecting Sauveterre de Guyenne to Bordeaux.
Halfway between St. Emilion and Sauternes, Sauveterre is the capital of the main wine-producing district in l’Entre-Deux-Mers. Here are made the following AOC wines

« Bordeaux Supérieur », « Entre-deux-Mers » and « Crémant de Bordeaux ».
