The town is built along the left bank of the river Lot in a region that has been inhabited since time immemorial. It was in the Middle Ages, that the town was placed under the protection of Sainte Livrade and set up around the Benedictine priory founded in the 9th century.
At the beginning of the 12th century, the college of canons, that occupied the monastery, left all its goods to the Benedictine abbey of La Chaise-Dieu (or House of God). It was around this same period that the church was rebuilt.
